Black Bear Behind Bars

Downhome staffer Chris Hodder visited Labrador recently, in search of great photos, stories and the true Labrador experience. And he got a lot more than he bargained for. One afternoon, while driving towards Sheshatshiu, he crossed the path of a black bear that offered a few wild photo ops, plus a good laugh!

"The bear lolly-gagged around for about 20 minutes, entertaining me, and eventually found his way to a roadside bear trap and managed to get itself trapped. Wildlife officers showed up about an hour later and towed the trap away to release the bear into the wild...far away from the community," says Chris, who photographed the bear from the safety of his vehicle.

Why did the black bear cross the road?

Because there was garbage on the other side.

Mmm leftovers.

And a refreshing drink to wash it all down.

I'm so bored, I could take a nap right here.

Do you have any ideas, Mr. Photographer?

This contraption looks like it might be fun.

Where's the entrance to this thing?

Ah! Here it is.

Wait now...

D'oh! Mama Bear always told me I should learn to read!
