How Cold was it, Uncle Peter?

Uncle Peter Hickey used to tell this story of the old days before modern heating came into existence. Ours being a good Catholic household, there was always a statue of a saint or two placed around the house. In this particular case, it was a statue of St. Joseph at the top of the stairs. On some winter mornings, Uncle Peter would joke, it would be so cold that St. Joseph himself would have his arms wrapped around his torso, shivering and shaking to keep warm!
