Over the last year, close to 10,000 submissions poured in to the Downhome office via our website and snail mail. The editors carefully read and considered each one, selecting only the best for print in the pages of Downhome. After more closely scrutinizing every photo submission that made it to print during 2012, we present to you our top 12 favourite photos from last year. Now, we're leaving it to you to determine the best of the best and decide who wins an iPad and a one-year digital subscription to Downhome. Voting is open Jan. 3-31 (one vote per household). The winner will be revealed in the March 2013 issue.
Creature Comforts (12270 views) Marc, Dolphins & Downhomer in Cuba. In June 2012, we seen many dolphins during our scuba trips. I made time with my trained friends after a "few beers." That was indeed a thrill in itself! A fantastic time was had by all.
Our granddaughter Hayley kneeling in Arctic cotton at Cape Ray, NL. This plant thrives in our Northern Hemisphere in acid bogs and looks like little puff balls. It makes any photo look peaceful.

This proud momma and her new baby showed up one morning for a photo op. The picture was taken right outside our house on the shores of Crescent Lake.

My father and mother left their home, friends and family to give my brother Rennie and I a better life in a new country, Canada. My father also gave up his quarter share in a schooner, their home and his way of life of fishing and woodworking. He was 55 years old.
Years ago, my brother Rennie started working on the Wagg family tree. The photo comes from his research. (He passed away a few years ago.) Burin Harbour - Sailing Ships. Photo taken 1905. Man-o-War Hill is visible behind the boats. I imagine this is a fishing fleet leaving for the fishing grounds.
We hope this old picture brings back a lot of memories for many people. ... Hide full submission

Standing on the left is me (William Butt) now residing in Grand Falls-Windsor and on the right is my brother (Albert Butt) who resides in Cambridge, Ontario. This picture has always been the talk of the family. The codfish in this photo weighed a whopping 83 pounds. Our cousin (Chesley Butt) of Burnside, Bonavista Bay is behind the splitting table on the wharf and he is holding up the cod with a pitchfork. This cod was caught by our father (Heber Butt) who passed away in 1985. Try to catch a cod this size today!! Don't see it happening. Would love to see this story in the Downhome. It would make my day!
