50 Eventful Years (1 comments)
Congratulations to Robert and Hilda Balsom of Clarenville (but who spend most of their time in Terra Nova) from their five children, seven grandkids and three great-grandkids. Happy 50th anniversary on August 1, 2009. There will be an open house at 3 Park Avenue on July 31, 2009. Come celebrate with them.

On June 26th 2009 my dughther had to go into the Janeway. With an eight-day stay in St. John's we needed to get out around. On one of our walks around Quidi Vidi Lake we came across this big bird. Not knowing what it was we stayed and watched it for about 20 minutes. It was plain to see right from the beginning this big bird was on guard. To our surprise this bird was protecting a duck and her ducklings. it was amazing to watch as he wouldn't let anyone go near them. When the mother duck finally went into the water with her ducklings this big bird followed like a father protecting it's children.
For about a week later we talked about this bird, not knowing what it was, and thanks to your May magazine that my mother was holding onto, we found out what it was - a Greater White Fronted Goose.
Thank you.

Escape Routes - June 2009
In the June issue I notice from the Escape Routes there was no mention of Burnt Islands, which is in between Rose Blanche and Isle aux Morts and no mention of Fox Roost and Maragree, which is between Isle aux Morts and Port aux Basques. Maybe you should have included these communities as they are the only two still with a working fish plant on the south corner of NL. I love reading Downhome and hope to see my place of birth (Burnt Islands).
