Are there any digital camera companies products I should avoid?

And if so why?
I'm not sure if things have changed but I used to own a Olympus digital camera and found using it difficult. To do simple things took too much effort and it wasn't very user friendly. I have also owned two Cannon digital cameras - which are easy to use but both broke for the same reason. The cameras with the type that the lens comes out of the camera when turned on. These seem to damage very easy - just a grain of sand can get in between the moving parts and cause it to fail. If you going to be doing much outdoor photography in rumble-tumble environments I'd avoid this style of camera.
I recently bought a simple Nikon that just has a cover on the lens that moves across when turned on. It is small and easy to carry and the software is logical but doesn't shoot as good quality pics as the Cannon. I guess it comes down to a trade off of one benefit for another.
Hope this helps.
