is the reader voting any part of your decision for picking a photo for any contests?

The "star" rating system is only for users to say whether they like a photo or not. The highest rated photos show up under "Top Submissions".
In something like picking the "Submission of the Year" finalists, a separate voting system is used where votes do count.
For something like the calendar or cover contest the art department decides to use what photos look the best in quality and theme as well as those the fit the proportions of those mediums.
