School Days

There was a time when "back to school" didn't mean buying a whole new wardrobe, a trendy book bag and a cartful of school supplies. Instead, going back to school, for many children in Newfoundland and Labrador, meant walking miles in all kinds of weather to a tiny one-room school, where all ages gathered for lessons.

Over the years, Downhome has been sent many old class photos (spanning more than a century) and in the spirit of back to school season, we've compiled several of them into a "School Days" slideshow. Names, years and locations have been provided where available.

We hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane. Click to view slideshow.
