Sylvester knew that the dots on opposite sides of every die always add up to seven, so the total of two opposite sides of five dice is always 35. So all he had to do was count the total number of dots on the top sides and subtract it from 35 to get the number of dots on the bottoms. So the game was rigged – he could never lose and gamblers would never collect $100.
